![]() ![]() However by the end of the novel I found myself feeling for her, the ending of the novel was very surprising and something I never saw coming. ![]() However Archer is in a relationship with a member of the ‘triad’ Elodie, therefore even though Sophia begins to realise her feelings she is conflicted as he isn’t available. But Hex Hall has all the components of a good Young Adult read including the ever so wonderful aspect of Sophia’s growing attraction to the school’s heart throb Archer. I have never read a Young Adult Novel which focuses on magic like witches before therefore it is unlike anything I have ever read so I have nothing to compare it to. Going into Hex Hall, I didn’t know what to expect and I was pleasantly surprised. ![]() Neither does her growing attraction to the schools resident heart throb. The ‘triad’, 3 goddess like girls wanting to recruit her to their coven and teasing her endlessly don’t help much either. Hex hall follows Sophia as she journeys to discover more about her true self and her powers, her family history and not to mention to work out who is really behind the mysterious deaths that claimed a girl before her arrival and attempts another whilst she is there. A boarding school for all things magical from werewolves, to fairies and vampires. Sophia isn’t your average teenage girl she’s a witch and after a love spell gone wrong she finds herself in Hecate Hall. ![]()

Women of my generation lived through Charles’s betrayal and we can’t shake off memories of Camilla’s role in that desperately sad saga. It’s made more poignant by the fact that she feared the woman who got her husband would get to wear the crown. And I’m afraid to say much of this has to do with Diana who, even in death, casts a shadow over today’s proceedings. However much Charles loves Camilla, his subjects do not share his adoration. Most telling was that Queen Camilla was near the bottom, along with Meghan, Harry and Andrew. But why did he have to over-reach with Camilla when so many of us still have misgivings about her? A poll in the Mail this week mirrored my own concerns - naming the late Queen our most popular royal, Prince William in second place followed by his mother Princess Diana who died nearly three decades ago. Like millions of loyal monarchists, I wish King Charles and Queen Camilla well. But more importantly, nor did the British public. To be fair, Camilla never asked for this honour. ![]() Wondering how can you get a front row seat at King Charles III's Coronation from across the pond in America? FEMAIL made a complete guide to his big day ![]() ![]() ![]() Let me just preface this blog post by saying that I am not a professional film critic, and that I am by no means an expert on Australian cinema. And sometimes, that's just a plain disappointment. When those books are adapted for the movies, sometimes what the director and the cast and the screenwriter choose to portray can be in direct contrast with your own thoughts. Reading is such a personal experience, whereby the novel gives you just enough information to allow you to imagine its world all on your own- what the characters look like, what particular events might mean, and why certain things may have occurred. Whenever a beloved book is adapted for the big screen, there is always the possibility that it will be a let down. Some of you may know that I wrote my Honours thesis on the novel, back in 2012, so I approached this film with a degree of trepidation. ![]() ![]() One of the most hotly anticipated film releases for this year- for me, anyway- was the film adaptation of Jasper Jones by WA author, Craig Silvey. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Later in the book as she is under a lot of stress she observes that she has lost quite a lot of weight and feels pretty, like other girls. When she begins running, for appearance rather than health, this is presented as a positive. The main character observes a few times early in the novel that she believes she is a bit overweight and unattractive, there is no evidence that this is the perception of others. This is in no way impacts the plot, so the following is not a spolier. I had a couple of issues with how the book dealt with the theme of body image, or rather, didn’t deal with it. They are for the most part dealt with well, the seriousness or challenges of dealing with emotional responses is not underplayed, though some scenes or recreations by characters do seem designed to prove a point rather than develop the characters in a meaningful way. There are some pretty heavy issues addressed in this novel, such as: death of a parent, death of friends/classmates, bullying, and cyberstalking. The main drawback is in the way some other teenage behaviours are presented. Though it errs on the ‘preaching’ side of the divide, Risk is still an engaging novel by an author who clearly understands both the risks and realities on the online activities of young adults. An important cautionary tale for young teens about staying safe online, with some inconsistent views on body-image. ![]() ![]() ![]() This is a Victorian-era mystery series featuring Lady Julia Grey who is a widow at the beginning of the series. ![]() The Lady Julia Grey series was the first mystery series that Deanna Raybourn wrote, starting with Silent In the Grave in 2006. ![]() There is a reason for this-the chess drama is an adaptation of a novel by Walter Tevis, and the series tells the entirety of the book. ![]() Some shows are billed as regular series, which means that they might air over multiple seasons, while some are billed as "limited series" or "mini-series," which means they are telling a self-contained story, to be told over a limited number of episodes, usually over the course of one season.Īs The Queen's Gambit is a limited series, this means that it is likely to be one and done on Netflix. We know this because of the different designation that Netflix and other TV networks give their series. ![]() However, we are still very unlikely to see a Season 2 of The Queen's Gambit. Per TV ratings aggregator FlixPatrol, the Anya Taylor-Joy chess drama has been the most-watched series on the streamer in the world for the past seven days, and there doesn't seem to be any chance of it leaving the charts any time soon.Īt this point, a show's chances of getting a Season 2 would be fairly high, even in a climate where Netflix is canceling many of its shows early.
